Basketball pundits were confident that the Cleveland Cavaliers star Andre Drummond would pick up the $28.7 million option during the off-season. According to many reports, the decision was nothing but inevitable for the ex-All-Star.

Owing to the COVID-19 situation, Drummond was given the option to make up his mind by October 17. While circumstances in the sports world change in a jiffy, he decided to quash rumors by signing the dotted line.

On June 23, the center revealed on ESPN’s Le Batard & Friends that he would definitely be seen in the Cavaliers’ jersey next season. Drummond further added that he loves his teammates, coaching staff, the gym, and most importantly, the fans.

This move to stay makes sense, considering that the NBA is planning to cap player salaries due to the pandemic. Drummond can capitalize on an assured check in lieu of a one-year deal instead of testing the waters in the market. If he decides to make the switch next year, teams such as San Antonio, Dallas, and Charlotte would be ready to swoop him.

In such a phase, it also makes sense for Cavaliers to retain Drummond for a few years. After his transfer from Detroit during the annual trade deadline, he has made eight appearances with a record of 4-4.

Playing an average of 28.1 minutes a game, the big man managed to secure 17.5 points with a shooting accuracy of 55.2%. He showed glimpses of his best abilities during a match against Spurs during the 2019-20 season, where he scored 28 points with 17 rebounds.

While the numbers are not enough for him to get a long-term deal this time around, Cleveland has already discussed extension plans.

Among a number of variables, it is important to find out his long-term adaptability in the squad and coach Bickerstaff’s system. Plans may also have to be changed based on the football player’s decision as the NBA draft is a day after the October 17 deadline.

If the team makes it to the playoffs next year, the Cleveland Cavaliers will most likely commit to Drummond for the foreseeable future.

We will have to wait and watch what is in store for Drummond and the team. For the time being, they’re rumored to be linked for the majority of next season. Both are heading towards a crucial juncture, and the 2020-21 season of the NBA could be a game changer.
